The Seamless Silk Pillowcase — No Zipper, No Seams

$79.00

Standard size, one pillowcase. One product, one price — we don't sell bundles.

Construction: no zipper, no seams

A zipper is the only part of a pillowcase that can break, and it fails in the worst place: against your face, in the wash, every week. So we left it off. This case is one continuous tube of silk, open at one end, with no hardware and no side seams to pucker or pull. Why that matters →

The one design decision that matters

Why this pillowcase has no zipper — and no seams

Zippers are a maintenance problem

Every zipper on a pillowcase is a moving part sitting where it gets the most abuse and the least care. Laundry detergent, hot water, fabric softener and the dryer all attack the mechanism. Nylon coils stiffen, metal sliders corrode, and eventually the pull seizes halfway.

Then the pillowcase is finished. You can't open it, so you can't use it. A perfectly good piece of silk becomes waste because of a component that cost pennies to add.

There is also the part nobody mentions: zipper tape is polyester or nylon. A pillowcase advertised as 100% mulberry silk is not 100% silk at the closure, and that closure is the edge your cheek rests against.

Seams are where fabric fails

A seam is a line of needle holes and a concentration of stress. Over years of washing, seams pucker, the thread (usually polyester) pulls, and a ridge forms exactly where you sleep.

So we removed them too. This pillowcase is woven as a single tube of silk, open at one end. There is no wrong side, no ridge, no seam allowance and no stitching across the sleeping surface.

The full reasoning, including the trade-off

What arrives

One pillowcase, one box, and nothing to unwrap around.

No outer sleeve, no plastic, no printed insert telling you about the products we don't make. The box contains the pillowcase.

The closed caramel gift box on a wooden side table beside a lamp, printed with the words Mulberry Silk Pillowcase and a fine white line drawing of a single daisy.

A box worth keeping

The pillowcase arrives folded on acid-free tissue inside a rigid, paper-wrapped two-piece box. The lid carries a single hand-drawn chamomile flower — one flower, printed once, rather than a logo the size of your hand.

It is a real box rather than a mailer pretending to be one, for two reasons: it protects the silk, and it stays worth keeping if the pillowcase is a gift. It travels inside a plain corrugated carton so the gift box arrives unmarked.

What to check on any silk pillowcase

  • Momme weight stated numerically — not "high quality silk".
  • Grade stated as 6A by a named testing standard.
  • "100% mulberry silk" — not "silk-touch" or "satin silk".
  • What the closure is made of. If it has a zipper, the tape is usually polyester.
  • A trial window long enough to survive one real wash.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why is there no zipper?

A zipper is the only component on a pillowcase that can fail. Detergent, heat and fabric softener attack the mechanism, the teeth catch hair, and when the slider seizes the pillowcase becomes unusable — you cannot get a pillow in or out of it. Silk itself wears out extremely slowly, so the zipper usually dies long before the fabric does.

There is a second reason: zipper tape is polyester or nylon, so a pillowcase sold as 100% mulberry silk is not 100% silk at the closure — and the closure sits against your face.

Full explanation: why we removed the zipper

Why are there no seams?

A seam is a line of needle holes and a place where stress concentrates. Over years of washing, seams pucker and the stitching thread — usually polyester — can pull. This pillowcase is woven as one continuous tube, so there are no side seams, no ridge across the sleeping surface and no seam allowance reducing the usable area.

Without a closure, will the pillow slide out?

No, in normal use. The tube is cut to 30 inches, so a standard pillow tucks well past the open end, and silk's own surface friction holds it there. What you get in exchange is no hardware against your skin and nothing to break.

If you want a case that is mechanically closed — a zipper or an envelope flap — we are genuinely not the right choice, and we would rather say so now than have you return it.

What does "25 momme" actually mean?

Momme is a Japanese unit used to measure silk weight — it describes the mass of silk in a fixed area, so a higher momme means a denser, heavier fabric. 19 momme feels light and airy, 22 is the industry standard, and 25 is a heavyweight with a fuller hand-feel and slower wear.

Full explanation: Momme Weight Explained

Is this real silk or satin?

Real silk. "Satin" describes a weave structure, not a fibre — many satin pillowcases sold online are polyester. Ours is 100% mulberry silk woven in a charmeuse construction, which is a type of satin weave.

Will it fit my pillow?

It fits a standard U.S. bed pillow. The case measures 20" × 30" and fits pillows up to roughly 20" × 26", which covers the great majority of pillows sold in the United States. Measure your pillow before ordering — we make one size, so if yours is a queen or king, this will be too short.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold on a delicate cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Use a pH-neutral detergent, skip fabric softener and bleach, then hang or lay flat to dry away from direct sun. There is no zipper to protect and no seam to fray, so it is unusually forgiving for silk. Full steps are in our silk care guide.

How is it packaged?

One pillowcase, folded on acid-free tissue, inside a rigid paper-wrapped two-piece gift box. There is no plastic sleeve, no poly bag, no tape and no printed insert — the box contains the pillowcase and nothing else. It ships inside a plain corrugated carton so the gift box arrives unmarked, which matters if you are sending it straight to someone else.

What is included in the 60-night sleep trial?

Sleep on it for 60 nights. If it isn't right, start a return from your account and we'll refund the full purchase price — the label is on us. Items should come back washed and undamaged.

Do you sell anything else?

No. One pillowcase, one size, eight colours. We would rather make one thing properly than run a catalogue of add-ons, and we would rather quote one honest price than hide margin inside a bundle.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship within the United States. International shipping is in progress — email hello@silkdreamlux.com and we'll let you know as soon as your country is available.
